The Canadian Light Source Synchrotron, built at a cost of CAD 173 million in 2003, is the school's most powerful representative in terms of scientific research capabilities. The accelerator covers an area the size of a football field and is Canada's first device to study accelerating electrons to near the speed of light. At the same time, it greatly enhances the position of universities in the field of world physics research.
