College introduction
Columbia College was founded in 1936 and is the oldest private international college in Canada. It is a non-profit organization registered under the BC Community Act. At the beginning of its establishment, the college mainly focused on teaching high school diploma courses; In 1965, the college introduced a university transfer credit program, and the credits earned by students through this program were recognized by universities in Canada and the United States; In the 1970s, in order to meet the increasing demand of international students to improve their English proficiency, the college began offering training courses in English as a second language. The school has 800 international students from over 40 countries, accounting for 90% of the total student population.
Columbia College is located in the heart of Vancouver, with convenient transportation. 1. University Transfer Program
The university transfer credit program is designed for students who have successfully completed secondary school in British Columbia or have completed equivalent education in other regions. All subjects in this course can be transferred to first and second year universities in British Columbia, as well as other regions of Canada and the United States. The course offers the following subjects:
Students who complete subjects such as business, computer science, engineering, geography, natural sciences, humanities, etc. can transfer to their second and third year of university.
2. University Foundation Programs
There are four different university foundation courses available for students who are interested in attending university but have not completed the required subjects to choose from:
High school curriculum: designed for students who have completed grade 10 or 11 (or equivalent grades in other regions). Students are required to complete the 11th and 12th grade subjects required by the Education Department for graduation, and participate in the 12th grade provincial examination. Graduates can obtain a British Columbia Diploma of Secondary Education and are eligible to enroll in the first year of any university in Canada or the United States (depending on the average points required by the university).
Accelerated Middle School Curriculum: Designed for students who have achieved excellent grades in 10th or 11th grade (or equivalent overseas) and wish to enter Columbia College transfer courses as soon as possible.
Adult high school curriculum: designed for students aged 19 or above (or 18 years old but have been away from school for at least one year) who have completed 10th or 11th grade (or equivalent overseas). Graduates can obtain a British Columbia Adult Diploma and are eligible to enroll in Columbia College's College Transfer Program or other college transfer programs in British Columbia.
University preparatory courses: designed for students who have graduated from high school but lack certain subject qualifications and cannot directly enter university transfer courses. This course is designed for individual students' backgrounds and goals, usually only for one semester, and includes up to four academic preparation subjects that are suitable for the level. If high school subjects are a prerequisite for entering university courses, they will be included in this curriculum.
3. English as a Second Language (ESL) course
This English as a Second Language course trains students to master the language skills necessary for academic success in high schools or universities in North America. All classes are conducted in a challenging and social environment, and students need to actively participate. The characteristics of this course include:
• Different levels from beginner to highest level
• Wide range of elective subjects
TOEFL Preparation Class (Elective)
Six sessions per year, each lasting seven weeks
• Can choose full-time or part-time courses
Academic Year Schedule
Each academic year is divided into three semesters, each lasting fourteen weeks. The school starts in January, May, and September.
Students who plan to transfer to universities through university transfer courses must complete 30 credits within two semesters.
application for admission
1. Students are over 16 years old and have a high school GPA of 2.0 or above.
2. Students applying for university transfer programs must have graduated from high school with an English proficiency level of TOEFL 550 or IELTS 5.5.
3. Students who fail to meet the English proficiency standards can participate in the college's English training first, and then start studying university transfer courses after passing the exam.
