Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has rejected the call from Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), not to ban US President Donald Trump from attending the G7 summit in Canada this June.
At an event in Montreal on Thursday, Trudeau stated that he believes the idea of banning Trump is an "irresponsible" approach to national governance and relations with other countries.
In response to questions about Singh's remarks, Trudeau said, "Nowadays, politicians are prone to making simple and shocking statements. We can see such situations around the world. I am not that kind of Canadian politician.
In a speech in Montreal on Wednesday, Singh stated that he should not be allowed to enter due to Trump's threat to Canadian sovereignty and his criminal conviction.
Singh said, 'We need to ban Donald Trump from attending the G7 summit. Trump should not be welcomed.'.
Why should we invite someone who threatens our democracy and sovereignty? Why should we invite someone who threatens our economic well-being
In a media statement, Singh stated that appeasement policies are not feasible and that the G7 summit should be an opportunity for countries to "jointly resist Trump".
He said, 'The focus of the G7 should be on mutually beneficial economic cooperation among countries.'. But Trump's goal is very clear, he is pursuing economic dominance through threats, trade wars, and making Canada the 51st state of the United States.
As the rotating chair of the G7 this year, Canada will host the annual G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta in June.
A man from Alberta has initiated a petition demanding that Ottawa ban Trump from entering the country to attend a conference, and the petition has received tens of thousands of signatures in support.
On Thursday, in a meeting before the press conference, Trump accepted an invitation from British Prime Minister Kil Stammer on behalf of King Charles III to make his second state visit to the UK.
Stamer said, 'This is really special, unprecedented, unprecedented.'.
Before meeting with Trump in Washington D.C., Simon Hall, a Conservative Party member and former minister, urged the Prime Minister to condemn Trump's "childish behavior".
He asked, "Although the Ukraine issue is clearly the focus of the meeting, will the Prime Minister emphasize to President Trump that Canada is a respected and beloved member of NATO and the Commonwealth
Stamer responded that the UK and Canada are close allies, and their partnership is based on a shared history, shared values, and a determination to actively play a positive role globally.
