CRA system questioned again: man stolen 32000 yuan refund by tax advisor

An elderly man in Edmonton claimed that a tax advisor who could access his account stole his $32000 tax refund.

Two years ago, Bruce Currie hired an independent tax consultant to assist him with tax reporting.

Currie said, 'She said I should apply for this disability tax credit.'. He said he informed the consultant at the time that he would apply for this credit on his own.

He stated that in December of last year, the Canada Revenue Agency approved him for tax credits.

Currie said, 'As my application has been approved 100%, the tax bureau will refund the taxes I have paid over the past ten years.'.

On December 18th, he received an email from the Canada Revenue Agency requesting him to check his online account.

At that moment, he discovered that the refund of 14000 yuan had been deposited into a bank account he did not know.

Currie claimed that the consultant accessed his Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) account, filed his 2023 tax return, and then changed his address and bank information to her own.

He reported the matter to the police and the Canada Revenue Agency, and then corrected his information.

But something similar happened again.

The Canada Revenue Agency told me that the money was deposited into a 'record account' from the completion of the assessment.

Currie said, "I was robbed 31000 yuan within a week

Currie said that the Canadian Revenue Agency assured him that the issue had been resolved, but just last week, the third deposit was lost.

He said, 'The tax bureau allowed this kind of thing to happen. I worked hard to earn this money - it's not a gift from the Canadian tax bureau.'.

His MP, Heather McPherson from Strathcona, Edmonton, said her office is often asked to help address issues with the Canada Revenue Agency.

McPherson said, 'In this situation, that mistake has not been resolved. And, you know, this will obviously have a very serious impact.'.

The Edmonton Police Department has revealed to Global News that they are conducting a fraud investigation but have not yet filed charges.

20 days ago, when we began investigating this matter, Global News contacted the Canada Revenue Agency for a comment on the matter. The government agency responded on Wednesday with instructions on how to report fraudulent behavior.

Currie doesn't know if she will lose more money.

The Canadian Anti Fraud Centre warns that phishing and fraud are very common during the tax season.

Jeff Horncastle, Customer and Communications External Relations Officer at the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre, said, 'Regularly verify your direct deposit information. Ensure that your benefits are paid and your address has not changed.'.
