Canada launches first round of retaliatory tariffs, with US alcohol, food, and daily necessities up 25%


The Canadian government has released a list of the first batch of US goods to be subject to a 25% retaliatory tariff that will take effect on Tuesday. Prices for US made alcohol, tobacco, poultry, shampoo, toothpaste, motorcycles, firearms, furniture, tomato sauce, spices, and even chocolate are about to rise. This list, covering hundreds of product categories, is the first of two rounds of tariffs that Canada will impose on US goods worth over $150 billion in the coming weeks.


In a press release, the federal government also announced a tariff reduction program that will allow Canadian companies to "apply for special tariff reductions in response to the unreasonable tariffs imposed by the United States on Canada.


The first wave of retaliatory tariffs of 25% on $30 billion worth of US made goods will begin on Tuesday, February 4th, and on the same day, the US will also impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian and Mexican goods.

Starting from Tuesday, the prices of the following goods imported from the United States will increase by 25%, including:


Live poultry such as chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and guinea pigs and their meat.

Most milk, cream, yogurt, cheese, and other dairy products.

Various fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, beans, citrus fruits (oranges, tangerines, lemons), melons, peaches, and apricots.

Coffee and tea.

Many spices and seeds, including ginger, thyme, bay leaves, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and vanilla.

Grains such as rye, wheat, barley, oats, and rice.

Bottled water, including mineral water and flavored water.

Almost all alcoholic beverages, including whiskey, beer, wine, and other spirits.

Cosmetics and toiletries, such as shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, shaving cream, and soap.

Motorcycles and scooters.

Firearms and ammunition.

Home and office furniture

Cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigarettes, nicotine bags, and other similar products.


The government stated in a press release that as long as the latest tariffs imposed by the United States on Canada remain in effect, these tariffs will continue to exist.


The Canadian Treasury Department stated in a press release, "As announced yesterday, the government also intends to impose tariffs on another $125 billion worth of US imports. The second list will be released in the coming days and will be subject to a 21 day public comment period before implementation


This includes passenger cars, trucks and buses, steel and aluminum products, certain fruits and vegetables, aerospace products, beef, pork, dairy products, and other products
