Layoffs during tax season! CRA terminates contracts for 450 temporary employees, affecting those under observation

During the annual tax season, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) notified 450 temporary employees nationwide that their contracts will not be renewed after the end of this month.

CRA spokesperson Etienne Biram stated that the tax bureau regularly reviews its financial resources to ensure operational sustainability and alignment with government priorities.

The spokesperson stated that the employee union has received notice of the layoffs, and the tax bureau will try to minimize the impact on taxpayers during the tax reporting season.

The federal government's expenditure review requires departments and agencies to cut costs. As early as November 2024, the CRA announced restrictions on some recruitment activities, froze 'non critical overtime', and terminated the contracts of approximately 600 temporary employees.

Biram stated that CRA will continue to evaluate its own financial situation and commit to providing high-quality tax services to Canadians, especially during the tax season.

For most Canadians, the deadline for personal income tax filing in 2025 is April 30th.
