CBSA reminder: Check the waiting time at the border for long weekend travel and bring all necessary documents before departure

As the long weekend approaches, many people in Canada have plans to transit to the United States or travel to other countries. Recently, the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) issued the latest reminder to ensure that everyone's travel can proceed smoothly.

Firstly, please check the waiting time at the border before departure.

Everyone knows that every long weekend is a popular time for transit. You can check the waiting time at the border in advance before traveling to understand the expected delay time. Especially Monday may be the busiest day, so if possible, please avoid crossing during peak hours.

In addition, in order to smoothly transit, people should also ensure that they have all travel documents ready and are prepared to declare all items carried to the visited country/region.

For tourists entering Canada, the following points should be noted when declaring:

Must declare food, plant or animal products

Poultry or any food containing poultry cannot be brought into Canada

Do not bring firewood across the border as it may contain diseases or invasive insects

Make sure you know the value of any items you carry with you (in Canadian dollars) and be prepared to present receipts

It is strictly prohibited to carry firearms and other weapons

Prohibition of carrying narcotics

Prohibited from bringing cannabis into Canada (although cannabis is legal in Canada, it is not allowed to bring any cannabis products into the country)

In addition, CBSA also reminds people that if traveling with children, especially non biological children entering the country, they should prepare a letter from their legal guardian authorizing them to travel with their children.

Moreover, if people travel with pets, they should also ensure that all the latest documents are prepared. Starting from August 1st, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States has implemented new regulations for pet dogs entering the country. The specific requirements depend on where the pet dog has been within the first 6 months before traveling to the United States.

Currently, dogs from Canada who have been to high-risk rabies countries within the 6 months prior to traveling to the United States are not eligible for direct entry from Canada into the United States. In this case, they must wait for 6 months in Canada before entering the United States, or directly enter the United States from a high-risk rabies country.

CBSA states that maintaining border security is a challenging task. In 2023, CBSA received over 86 million travelers crossing the Canadian border and intercepted over 72200 kilograms of prohibited drugs, narcotics, and chemicals.

If you have plans to leave the country, be careful of the minefields mentioned above!
