Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has issued a winter travel warning, expecting a blizzard on Friday afternoon with snow accumulation potentially exceeding 10 centimeters during evening commuting.
The Canadian Department of Environment stated that Toronto is expected to receive a cumulative snowfall of 5 to 10 centimeters, causing slippery roads and severely affecting traffic.
The Ministry of Environment stated that the Alberta Clipper cyclone will bring snowfall to the region, with some periods of heavy snowfall intensity. The strongest snowfall is expected to occur on Friday afternoon and evening, which may affect afternoon commuting
At present, it is predicted that the snowfall rate in the urban area may reach 2 to 4 centimeters per hour. The Ministry of Environment warns that visibility will decrease in some areas.
The warning states, "Please adjust your driving style according to changes in road conditions. If visibility decreases, turn on your lights and maintain a safe distance."
Toronto's daytime temperatures will reach 1 ° C on Friday, and may rise to 2 ° C in the evening before dropping to -6 ° C at night.
Other areas of GTA such as Mississauga, Brampton, Wangshi, Richmond Hill, and Markham are also within the range of Friday's winter travel warning.
Thunder Bay is expected to be more affected, with snowfall reaching up to 15 centimeters, and there may be rain and snow in the London and Niagara areas.
The temperature will drop over the weekend
The cold front will re affect Toronto and GTA this weekend, with an expected daytime temperature of -7 ° C on Saturday. However, due to the wind chill effect, the perceived temperature will drop to -15 ° C. On Sunday morning, it will be even colder, with temperatures expected to drop to -16 ° C, and the sensible body temperature due to the wind chill effect can reach -21 ° C.
Toronto has just recovered from a heavy snowfall in mid February. At that time, the blizzard caused widespread snow accumulation throughout the city, and Mayor Olivia Chow has requested a review of the city's winter operations.
Since last Wednesday, the Toronto City government has announced that staff have cleared nearly 105000 tons of snow from streets, sidewalks, and bike lanes.
The municipal government stated that due to heavy snowfall this month, a large amount of snow has accumulated, restricting traffic and blocking sidewalks. It is expected to take three weeks to complete the snow removal work.
