Toronto lawmakers voted in favor of increasing fines for over 100 illegal parking violations.
At Wednesday's meeting, the city council debated a staff report proposing to increase fines for 125 violations, including parking.
Jennifer McKelvie, a city councilor and chairman of the Infrastructure and Environment Committee, proposed a motion to modify some of the fine amounts in the initial staff report. Her motion was passed with a score of 20 to 1.
For example, the fine for parking on the bike lane will increase from 150 yuan to 200 yuan, and the fine for not paying the parking machine regulations will increase from 30 yuan to 50 yuan.
The approved increase in fines will take effect on August 1st.

The city council also ordered the general manager of transportation services to review all parking fines within five years and report the amount adjusted for inflation.
McKelvie acknowledges that fines will face resistance, but she says residents can choose to comply with regulations and park legally.

What we really want is that if the city of Toronto doesn't charge any money for illegal parking, it will be a beautiful day where everyone follows the road and traffic rules. Everyone is doing their part to ensure that we alleviate road congestion
According to the report, the majority of fines in many cities currently range from 15 yuan to 60 yuan, which is generally lower than the fines imposed by surrounding municipalities on similar violators. The report states, "Most fines in Toronto have remained largely unchanged since their enactment and will not automatically adjust for inflation
The proposed increase in fines will ensure greater consistency with fines in other jurisdictions, encourage compliance, ensure that fines for certain violations are commensurate with their severity, and ensure that fines for violations of the same category are the same to maintain consistency
According to the number of fines issued in 2023, after the increase in fines, the income of many cities may increase by 62 million yuan, and the staff expects the actual income to be between 40 million and 50 million yuan.
Prior to this new policy proposal, the fine for drivers found illegally parking on municipal and private property had increased from 30 yuan to 75 yuan in December last year.
