The latest data shows that the Canadian federal government is working hard to crack down on car theft cases nationwide. However, the federal government itself was not spared.
The document submitted to the House of Commons on Monday shows that 48 government vehicles from 14 departments and agencies were stolen between January 2016 and February of this year.
Some ministers are also not immune. The official vehicle of the Minister of Justice has been stolen three times in a row between 2021 and 2023.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Canadian Fisheries and Oceans Agency (including the Canadian Coast Guard) each discovered two stolen vehicles.
Several other departments and agencies each had one car stolen: the Canada Revenue Agency, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Employment and Social Development Canada, Finance Canada, Transport Canada, and Global Affairs Canada.
The document states that out of the 48 stolen vehicles, two were stolen more than once, and 34 have been recovered.
According to a report prepared by the Fair Trade Association for the National Car Theft Summit organized by the federal government in February, based on an analysis of national police data, over 70000 cars were stolen in 2023.
The report found that between 2021 and 2023, the number of stolen vehicles in Ontario increased by 48%, Quebec by 58%, and the Atlantic region of Canada by 34%.
The police stated that although up to one-third of stolen vehicles are resold within Canada, the majority of stolen vehicles are transported out of Canada by organized criminal groups, typically in containers to Africa and the Middle East.
