Suddenly! Federal Minister Wu Fengyi and Attorney General Virani do not seek re-election

As the Federal Liberal Party searches for its next leader, two other members of Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau's cabinet announced on Monday that they will not seek re-election.

According to CTV, Attorney General Arif Virani and International Trade Minister Mary Ng have joined the ranks of several prominent Liberal Party lawmakers who have decided not to seek re-election over the past 12 months.

I say this with a heavy heart, and in the past few weeks, I have engaged in a lot of self reflection, "Virani said in a statement posted on social media X on Monday.

But after the next election, my fight for Canada will no longer take place within Congress

Virani was appointed as a member of the Trudeau Cabinet in 2023, thanking the outgoing Prime Minister for giving him the opportunity to first serve as Parliamentary Secretary and then as Cabinet Minister.

Virani also described the sacrifices he and his family made in political work. My family has given me a lot, allowing me to pursue my dreams, not only serving our community but also our country. Now it's my turn to repay my loved ones, "Virani said.

Virani has decided not to run in the next election, which means that his Toronto constituency, Parkdale Hill Park, will face a nomination race from the Liberal Party. The Liberal Party regained control of the constituency from the New Democratic Party in the 2015 election.

Since 2018, Wu Fengyi has been serving in the cabinet, and this time she did not explain the reason for not seeking re-election.

In a statement released on Monday, Wu Fengyi said, "I am very grateful to my dedicated constituency and team, as well as my cabinet colleagues who have demonstrated a true spirit of teamwork, and Prime Minister Trudeau, whose leadership reminds us every day that our mission is to make Canada better for everyone

Wu Fengyi was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Markham Thornhill constituency in the 2017 by election, succeeding former Liberal Party Cabinet Minister John McCallum.
