The Liberal Party of Canada will elect a new leader on March 9th and replace Trudeau as Prime Minister. This means that there are only 2 days left until Trudeau steps down as leader of the Liberal Party.
On Thursday, 53 year old Trudeau attended his last press conference as prime minister in Ottawa, reviewing his nearly 10-year governing experience and expressing his expectation to "transfer power to the officially elected successor in the coming days or week". This statement publicly refutes Trump's claim that he wants to "stay in power" and further clarifies his resignation plan.
During his speech, Trudeau was emotional and couldn't help but shed tears, stating that he "always puts Canadians first".
This is the job I have chosen, and I will continue until the very end
When asked why he expressed emotions in his speech, Trudeau responded, "Being able to serve Canadians is the greatest honor of my life

According to him, as of 2025, the country has added or subsidized 150000 affordable childcare places, and plans to add another 100000 next year.
Since 2021, we have made significant progress in this area, but I believe all Canadians are aware that we cannot take these developments for granted. Trudeau hinted that the Conservative Party may cut back on the plan. He reminded the public that the 5-year agreement signed with various provinces and regions will expire in March next year, which has become a major concern for childcare institutions, parents, and local governments.
Anything a government does will not be overturned by the next government unless Canadians express a clear willingness to continue implementing this policy
Every day of my tenure as Prime Minister, I have always put Canadians first and firmly supported everyone. That's why I stand here today to tell everyone: 'We have always been behind you.' Even in the last few days of this government's term, we will not disappoint Canadians
Over the past few weeks, we have been working with partners in various provinces and territories to ensure that Canadian families can rely on this system and establish it firmly, so that no government can overturn it, whether it's one year, five years, or even 20 years from now
Trudeau emphasized that after the new government takes office, Canadians must have a clear understanding of the necessity to continue advancing this process.

Canada will never become the 51st state of the United States
Trudeau's speech comes at a critical stage of the trade war between Canada and the United States, as the US continues to modify exemption clauses in the US Mexico Canada Agreement (CUSMA), leading to greater uncertainty for the Canadian economy.
Shortly after winning the presidential election, Trump threatened to impose a comprehensive 25% tariff on imported goods from Canada and Mexico if they fail to curb fentanyl and illegal immigration into the United States.
Due to Canada and Mexico failing to meet their demands, the 25% import tariff announced by Trump has officially come into effect on Tuesday of this week.
However, on Thursday, Trump signed two executive orders to suspend taxes on certain goods for one month. Currently, approximately 38% of Canadian imports and 50% of Mexican imports are subject to the USMCA agreement, which grants a one month tariff exemption until April 2nd.

This concession was made after Trump's meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday and his call with Trudeau on Wednesday.
It is expected that Trump will launch a new round of tariffs on April 2nd, mainly targeting countries that impose tariffs on US exports.
Previously, Trump repeatedly mocked the outgoing Trudeau, calling him the "governor" and even hinted at turning Canada into the "51st state" of the United States.
Faced with Trump's tariff threats and annexation rhetoric, Trudeau believes that Canadians, like now, are united and preparing ideas on how the country should move forward for the next election.
Trudeau accused the 47th President of the United States of launching a "foolish" trade war against Canada and claimed that Trump was attempting to sabotage the Canadian economy in order to make it easier to annex the country.
We will never become the 51st state of the United States, but he can indeed cause damage to the Canadian economy, and he has already started doing so this morning. However, American families will soon realize that this practice not only harms us, but also harms people on both sides of the US border, "said Trudeau.
On January 6th of this year, Trudeau announced that he would resign as the leader of the Liberal Party, and it is expected that he will officially step down after the party holds leadership elections on March 9th.
Once a new party leader is elected, Canada's next federal election will be held before October 20, 2025.
