Trump officially signs executive order! The United States imposes a 25% tariff on Canadian goods

US President Donald Trump has officially signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian goods and a 10% tariff on Canadian energy products starting from midnight on Tuesday.

Goods from Canada and Mexico will be subject to a 25% tariff.

Chinese goods will face a new 10% tariff.

The tariffs apply to most goods and will officially take effect early Tuesday morning.

The executive order also includes retaliatory provisions stating that if Canada imposes import tariffs or takes similar measures on US goods, the US may further increase or expand the scope of tariffs.

The executive order reads: "Gang members, smugglers, human traffickers, and various illegal drugs are constantly pouring into our borders and communities

Canada has played a central role in these issues, including failing to invest sufficient resources or cooperate effectively with US law enforcement agencies to effectively curb the influx of illegal drugs

The executive order signed by Trump accused the existence of laboratories operated by Mexican drug trafficking groups in Canada, and said that although the amount of fentanyl flowing through the US Canada border was relatively small, it was enough to cause the death of 9.5 million Americans last year.

When will tariffs be lifted?

The executive order states that tariffs will only be lifted if the President determines that sufficient measures have been taken to alleviate the crisis.

On Saturday afternoon, US President Trump issued a statement on his Truth Social account confirming the implementation of comprehensive tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China.

Trump wrote: "We need to protect the American people. As President, I have the responsibility to ensure the safety of all people."

"When I campaigned, I promised to prevent illegal immigrants and drugs from flowing into our borders, and the American people overwhelmingly supported this commitment."

Previously, the White House released a "fact sheet" stating that Trump implemented tariffs under the pretext of a national emergency.

According to the "fact sheet," the Trump administration announced comprehensive tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, citing national "emergencies" and "public health crises.

The Trump administration stated in a statement that "the enormous threat posed by illegal immigration and drugs, including deadly fentanyl, constitutes a national emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA)

President Trump is taking decisive action to demand that Mexico, Canada, and China fulfill their commitments to prevent illegal immigration and curb the flow of drugs such as fentanyl into the United States

Trump plans to maintain these tariffs until the crisis is alleviated.

The White House stated that Trump is using America's economic advantage as a tool to ensure border security, and emphasized that voters authorized him to take this action when they voted for him.

According to informed sources, the Canadian government has been notified that the comprehensive tariffs imposed by the United States on Canada will take effect on Tuesday.

According to sources, Prime Minister Trudeau will deliver a speech after the official announcement of tariffs.

The White House's "fact sheet" did not mention a specific effective date. The document emphasized: "Tariff is a powerful and proven leverage tool that can be used to protect national interests. President Trump is using the tools in his hands to take decisive action, giving priority to the security of the American people and national security."

However, there is currently no evidence to suggest that Canada is the primary source of illegal drugs or immigration into the United States.

According to Vassy Kapelos, Chief Political Correspondent for CTV News, a senior government source revealed that the Canadian Cabinet discussed retaliatory tariffs at today's meeting, ranging in amount from $10 billion to $85 billion.

A cabinet source stated that they would not be surprised if Canada implements countermeasures against tariffs, and they would not be surprised if Trump further increases tariffs.

Canadian Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the Trump administration's "massive, unjust, and baseless tariffs" in a statement, calling them a harm to America's closest neighbor, greatest ally, and best friend. He urged the Liberal government to immediately recall Congress and take "one-to-one" countermeasures, targeting American businesses to minimize the impact on Canadian consumers.

He also emphasized that the government should not leave a penny from the new tariff revenue, but should use all the income to help affected workers and businesses. He also suggested tax cuts to promote economic growth, expand international trading partners, reduce dependence on the US market, and accelerate the construction of oil pipelines.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed on social media X that the Trump administration has officially implemented comprehensive tariffs on Canadian imports. Trudeau said in a statement, "I have met with provincial governors and cabinet members today, and will soon have a call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum

We don't want all of this, but Canada is ready

Trudeau will give a national speech tonight at 8:30 Eastern Time, and is expected to make important statements on Canada's response measures, economic impact, and possible countermeasures.
